This is Book 3 of the Cliff Walk Courtships by Cecily Wolfe. A Historical Fiction Christian Romance set in 1893; Newport, Rhode Island.
Mild Spoilers for Book One and Two:
Book One, Throne of Grace, followed Arthur and Josie as they fell in love with each other and God. Book Two, Crown of Beauty, follows Arthur's eldest sister Catherine as she struggles with what it means to be such a privileged young lady and how God could allow Josie to get so sick in her pregnancy.
Sarah is the youngest of the three Davenport children. While her family is inside celebrating the new year and the courtship of her older sister Catherine, Sarah sneaks out to the cliff walk to be with the "kids" more her age. There they are drinking by a fire when a young man grabs Sarah, as she struggles to get away a horrific accident occurs and everyone scrambles. Guild ridden Sarah decides to make it up to God and herself by working at First Steps.
Sam's family has been torn apart and he is doing everything he can to provide for his ailing mother. When he meets the cause of his pain will he have the strength to forgive her?
I feel like book three is a lot more emotionally dynamic than the first two books and I really appreciate it. The ending did feel a bit rushed but it ties all three books together quite sweetly. The guilt of knowing you have done something world shattering in self-defense is such a intrinsic question to many female lives. How far are you willing to go to protect yourself, and can you live with it afterwards?
